The Breath Process
(a simple, powerful self-development technique)

Frequently Asked Questions

What it is it

Rebirthing is a breathing technique. Continual connected breathing over a period of time energises the body and may bring up old memories, feelings and physical tension into awareness. Accepting (integrating) these sensations results in a profound sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

How do I do it?

It is usually done lying down. The Rebirther (sitter) sits beside the Rebirthee (breather) and supports the Rebirthee to keep breathing and to relax through any sensations. Within a two to three hour consultation, the breathing may take from 30 to 90 minutes.

What can happen?

It is difficult to predict any one session as every person is unique and each session is influenced by their state of mind, health, emotions and physical fitness. Typical symptoms are:

• changes of temperature (feeling hot or cold);

• tightness, tingling, cramping, perspiration;

• emotional release of sadness, anger or fear;

• memories of past relationships and early childhood;

• deep relaxation and a sense of bliss;

• an experience of meditation.

Is it safe?

The Rebirthing process is 100% safe, no one has ever been injured by it. If people experience any discomfort, it is because the sensations activated may not have been fully integrated. This may be because the issue is so deep that it requires more than one session to complete. It is always possible to breathe more slowly and activate less in the early stages of learning the technique.

Does it always work?

Not always. Sometimes if a person can’t breathe deeply enough in the allotted time or they are too uncertain to fully relax into the process or they fall asleep and don’t activate the body memory.
Benefit still occurs even if there is no activation as there is a release of tension and a movement towards the time when activation can occur, maybe a few sessions later. By analysing why activation did not occur reveals the patterns of belief that are stopping one from achieving. The Rebirth is always a metaphor for some aspect of life.

Is it hyperventilation?

Rebirthing is not hyperventilation. The Rebirthing breath is conscious, connected and relaxed. With this type of breathing the Rebirthee experiences deeper levels of relaxation and bliss. Symptoms of tension can only occur if the breath is forced.

With support and a willingness to experience the tension, the symptoms never get out of control and a release of deep tension from body memory occurs. The Rebirthee must work at bringing the symptoms into feeling, if they stop making the effort the symptoms immediately begin to subside.

Is it for everyone

Everyone can benefit from the Rebirth breathing. However it is not recommended to anyone who does not accept personal responsibility or does not want to change. Even children, elderly people and the infirm can benefit from a meditative connected breathing style of Rebirthing.

Why do ten sessions?

Each Rebirth is a step in the unfolding of the body memory. During the unfolding process a person may go through a roller coaster of intense and passive experiences.

Without the commitment to ten sessions it is easy to give up when things seem too uncomfortable or to rationalise that nothing is happening during a passive stage. The commitment of the ten sessions ensures that one is able to progress through all stages of the Rebirthing process.

Will Rebirthing change my life?

Rebirthing is a powerful tool which assists you to bring about the desired changes. It is an opportunity for you to release physical and emotional tension while increasing your awareness and clearing your unconscious beliefs.

Is it a cult?

Definitely not. Rebirthing is a breathing technique. The Australian Institute of Rebirthing respects most systems of thought and belief. The technique is open to your individual interpretation.

Why is it called Rebirthing?

When the technique was rediscovered in the early 1970s it was thought necessary to relive your birth before the old patterns of tension and belief could be released. It is now known that this is not necessary, as patterns may not have been imprinted at birth. However the name has continued and because each breathing session is a symbolicopportunity to be reborn (change).

How much does it cost?

The private consultation fees are similar to a clinical psychologist, between $260 to $350 for two hours. Group Rebirthing fees range from $95 to $195 per person.

Rebirthing is a safe, gentle and powerful breathing process. Its purpose is to use your breath to release any limiting physical or psychological conditions.

The immediate benefits are fuller breathing, reduced stress and increased aliveness.
